The area
Río Frío Area is half way between Los Villares and Valdepeñas de Jaén, around 7kms away from Los Villares and over 1,000 metres high. The water that runs from Sierra de la Pandera forms the source of the river here.
This place is well known for the shaded areas produced by the typical riverside woods and also for the natural spring with clear, cold water that give its name to the area (Río Frío means Cold River)
The natural spring flows from a hut with eight pipes called Ojos del Moral. The springs flow is constant, but sometimes in the winter the flow is so plentiful that it forms a small but rather attractive waterfall between the footbridge and the rocks.
There is a small recreation area, very suitable to spend a nice day in the countryside, with barbeques and tables. It is ideal for summer days due to the constant, relaxing sound of water and the freshness from the water and the shade of the trees.
The water from Río Frío Natural Spring is used to supply water both to Los Villares and Jaén; little wonder that the bottling factory of Sierras de Jaén is located here.
For those who love hiking, they can take a number of routes and paths such as those that take us to Puerto de la Hoya, la Pandera, or up to Los Villares following the course of the River Frío.
Due to its beauty and singularity, this place has been classified as Place of Ethnological Interest within the information system of the Andalucian Historic Heritage.
