The source
The source of the River Arbuniel, also known as El Nacimiento del Agua (“The Source of Water”) is located on the slopes of the Torre de Gallarín Mountain, near Arbuniel town, within the Sierra Mágina region.
It is one of the most fast-flowing, renowned rivers in Sierra Mágina, which the locals feel very proud of. Though its waters flow from an aquifer of limestone and dolostone rocks, the water has a remarkable saline feel to it due to the fact that it originates from marls with Triassic gypsums.
The course of the river is channelled through a number of irrigation canals that irrigate several hectares of land and enrichen the land. In the past, the river propelled flour and oil mills, but these days it is used to water the olive groves, which are the primary engine for the economy in this region.
There is a fantastic picnic area with barbeques, tables, benches, dustbins, a little bar and a playground where you can spend a lovely day in nature, and visitors can enjoy the shade and the breeze among the trees.
At the source of the River Arbuniel you will find ducks, trout and crayfish, which live in the waters due to the high levels of lime.
