The river walk

Puente de Génave is a town that belongs to the Sierra de Segura region. Its name comes from the fact that it used to be a commercial trail to Génave back in Roman times.

The River Guadalimar provides the backbone of this town from north to south and it splits Puente Génave in two parts, which are connected by two bridges called Puente Viejo (Old Bridge) and Puente Nuevo (New Bridge).

The Old Bridge was built in Roman times as part of the road network that connected Cástulo and Cartagena. It was built of stone and it has one basket arch where masonry and dressed stone alternate.

The New Bridge, although of an Arab origin, was built according to the techniques used in mid 19th Century Spain. The cut in the blocks of stones is remarkable and causes a lowering of the vaults and a narrowing of the pillars to allow water to pass through.

The promenade by the bank of the River Guadalimar is one of the greatest tourist attractions for those who come to this region, and also for fishermen who can enjoy fishing for barbel.

Due to their tradition of using waterpower, there are four old mills in Puente de Génave and one of them has been recently turned into a rural cottage.

Following the course of the River Guadalimar through the town, one can find interesting small waterfalls of which we must highlight the one in the town of Puente de Génave and the one in Puente Maniche, which is an old reservoir next to the Casa de la Vicaría.
